Working with youth

Nepal 2010RTC is currently working in partnership with Child Workers In Nepal (CWIN). CWIN is a pioneering child rights organisation working to advocate for the protection and promotion of the rights of the child. Since 1987 CWIN has actively lobbied, campaigned and applied pressure to government in order to enact positive change in the lives of disadvantaged or endangered children across Nepal. Through its various programmes and from its base in Kathmandu, CWIN aims to confront issues such as child labour, street children, child trafficking, sexual exploitation and children affected by conflict.

In January 2011, RTC in partnership with CWIN began implimenting two very different projects - both aimed at supporting youth and children affected by conflict. .

Reintegrating Former Child Soldiers in Nepal

In partnership with CWIN, we are supporting the reintegration process of children that were forced to participate in the decade long  civil war as part of the various armed groups. Our work specifically targets children who left the armed groups before the conflict had ended and were thus not recognized in the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA)  as ‘child soldiers' and who are not currently getting the support they need  to help them reintegrate back into their communities and families. Our work hopes to strengthen the policy frameworks and practical responses for addressing the psycho-social, family, community, and institutional challenges to effective reunification, reintegration and long-term development of these children.

Youth and creative conflict transformation in Nepal

We are also supporting youth thoughout the five development regions of Nepal to have greater involvement in the political process and building peace more widely. The project aims to create a national policy dialogue between youth, political parties and INGO's from different regions on peacebuilding issues and strategies.

This process will involve supporting young people to examine the effects of conflict through training in conflict transformation, research and street theatre. Throughout the project, youth will film their experiences and produce short documentaries to be presented to political leaders and on Nepali national television.
